FUTSAL is fast becoming the most
favorable and perhaps fastest growing
sport in Solomon Islands.
Proof can be found in Honiara alone
though indications have come from the
provinces to introduce futsal.
Friday last week saw the opening of
the Honiara futsal league and the
turnout was overwhelming. Futsal head
coach Victor Waiia said it became
apparent that interests
among the children grow with the
years.
One does not need to look far for
evidence of it.
Twelve schools took part when it was
first introduced in 2002 however, it
experienced growth and now more than
100 teams have registered for the new
league. Those registered are from ages
between 11 and 15 years for both boys
and girls. Meanwhile vice president of
the Solomon Islands Football
Federation (SIFF) and chairman of the
futsal committee Martin Alufurai
reiterated in his remarks on Friday
that futsal is truly the fastest
growing sport in the country.
He stressed that as representative of
SIFF on the OFC futsal committee and
also OFC rep in FIFA, he would pursue
the idea to have regional futsal
competition(s) so that member
countries can meet regularly to
compete.
The opening matches for the futsal
league kick start on Saturday at the
Multipurpose hall in Honiara. Games
will only be played on Mondays,
Fridays and Saturdays
