03/23/2005: Pulaski County Fire storm Springfield

The Pulaski County Fire went a combined 15-1 during the Fall and Winter sessions of Futsal played in Springfield. The team won both the Fall and Winter session gold medals. Front Row (l-r): R.J. Best and Gehrig Haberstock. Back Row (l-r): Austin Ray, head coach Richard Haberstock, Ross Carroll, Wesley Reznicek and Sarah Dowling.

The Pulaski County Fire Soccer U-12 Team started their season last October. The team was composed of seven players from Dixon, Fort Leonard Wood, and Waynesville. The Fire didn't set high expectations, but rather, an achievable goal of 4-4.

The Fire rolled into Springfield Lake Country Complex to learn the game of Futsal. Futsal is played on a field the size of a basketball court. Each team plays five players at a time. Teams are able to substitute on the fly as in hockey. With no throw-ins from the side, a player has to kick the ball into play within four seconds.

The Fire went 7-1 in the first session during the fall, winning a first-place gold medal for their play during the first session. The Fire took two weeks off and started training again in the first week of January.

The team revised its goals for the second session, aiming to achieve a 6-2 record. The wining ways of the team continued as the Fire went a perfect 8-0 in the second Futsal session and collected the second gold medal when season ended March 12.

The Fire compiled a 15-1 record playing club teams. Each player had an integral role in the success of the team. The Fire were led by goalie Chris Beaudoin, who allowed a miniscule 1.56 goals-against average. Beaudoin also scored three goals on the season.

For the year the team averaged seven goals a game. The team's offense was led by Gehrig Haberstock's 38 goals. R.J. Best added 28 goals, and Wesley Reznicek scored 14 goals on the year.

The team's defense was led by Austin Ray with 11 goals, Ross Carroll with six goals, and Sarah Dowling with five goals, while keeping the other teams' attackers at bay.

The Pulaski County Fire was coached by Richard Haberstock.

"From the beginning, our goal was to play as a team and develop each player's basic skills," said Haberstock.

The Pulaski County Fire will take part in the upcoming Show-Me State Games in July 2005.
